Culture & Tradition Makes the World Turn

Whether they be featured by friends, relatives, co-workers and/or strangers; if you’ve attended a wedding in our society, chances are high that you’ve experienced one cultural wedding tradition, if not another.

We, at Ritche, thought it would be fun to feature some of the many traditions that are celebrated in cultural weddings. Below you will find traditions that we have experienced personally, read about or have been introduced to by clients in the store. We always find new learning experiences insightful and hope that you enjoy this.

Italian Wedding Tradition – Lucky Day, Lucky Colour : Italian wedding tradition says that Sunday weddings are the luckiest. When the bride wears green on the evening before the wedding it will bring luck and abundance, subsequently, if the bride wears gold on the day of the wedding or before it the marriage will receive bad luck.

African Wedding Tradition – Jumping the Broom : this tradition is one that goes back to the days of slavery, when people were forbidden from being married. This tradition was implemented to symbolize the beginning of a new life together, in modern ceremonies, couples will jump over a broom usually decorated in tulle and other beautiful fabrics (while holding hands).

Chinese Wedding Tradition – Dress Change : In modern ceremonies, a Chinese bride will change her dress three different times. Firstly a traditional white wedding dress, Second is a traditional Chinese bridal gown for the tea ceremony and the third dress is a cocktail dress to send off guests.

French Wedding Traditions – Parental Tribute : As tradition, in modern French weddings the bride and groom dedicate inclusion to their parents where the groom walks his mother down the aisle before arriving at the altar to be married. This lovely gesture is sure to fill up romantic hearts. The bride will receive the ‘trousseau’; literally referring to a bundle of linens and clothing for the bride to take with her after the wedding, stored in a hope chest that was hand-carved by her father.

Greek Wedding Tradition – Left to Right : In Greek wedding tradition, the bride and groom will wear their rings on the left hand, and after they are married they each switch the rings to the right hand.

Indian Weddings – A Celebration of a Lifetime : A typical traditional Indian wedding is one that lasts over a course of several days with numerous traditional ceremonies, these include; mehndi painting of hands and feet, throwing of many many flower petals, and washing of the grooms’ feet while he has milk and honey.
