While today has been traditionally celebrated as the birthday of Queen Victoria, we found it only fitting to discuss her love and marriage to husband, Albert.
After being introduced to her later husband, Albert (by both his & her uncle), while completely unprepared and uninterested in being married, Victoria took a strong liking to Albert. Her mentions of him included her happiness in his personality and appearance, claiming that “He has besides the most pleasing and delightful exterior and appearance you can possibly see.”
On June 20th, 1837 Victoria became Queen of The United Kingdom of Great Britain & Ireland. Between 1837 & 1839, thoughts of Albert continuously resided in Victoria’s mind, she was impressed by his education and showed interest in the thought of him as her husband. After a second visit in 1839, the overwhelming affection was mutual between the pair and on October 15th, the Queen proposed!!!
On February 10th, 1840, they were married in The Chapel Royal at St. James Palace in London. Although the Queen spent their wedding night laying down with a headache, she spoke fondly of their union with these words…
“I NEVER, NEVER spent such an evening!!! MY DEAREST DEAREST DEAR Albert … his excessive love & affection gave me feelings of heavenly love & happiness I never could have hoped to have felt before! He clasped me in his arms, & we kissed each other again & again! His beauty, his sweetness & gentleness – really how can I ever be thankful enough to have such a Husband! … to be called by names of tenderness, I have never yet heard used to me before – was bliss beyond belief! Oh! This was the happiest day of my life!”
After Albert’s death in 1861, Victoria was known as “the Widow of Windsor”, refusing any conversation, public appearances, entered a state of mourning and wore black for the remainder of her life. It is interesting to understand how much has changed in terms of wording and rituals but inspiring to see how much has stayed the same. One thing that never seems to change is how irresistible, exhilarating and beautiful loving that perfect partner really, truly is!
In 2009, actress Emily Blunt starred in the motion picture ‘The Young Victoria’ as Queen Victoria, see the trailer below! We’re so excited to check it out!!!
